Established in 1986, the Nassau
Wings spun off of the older Suffolk Wings Motorcycle Club when several members
from Queens and Nassau Counties in New York decided it was too difficult
to travel out to Patchogue to attend regular meetings. The Nassau
Wings is chartered club 5797 with the American Motorcyclist Association
(AMA).It was incorporated as a Not-For-Profit
organization in the State of New York in 1989.
The Nassau Wings Motorcycle Club is a club
open to both men and women, and (despite what many feel the name
implies) to any and all brands of motorcycles. We prefer
experienced riders, though beginners are invited to ride with us on
various runs, and we will work with them till their skill levels are
acceptable to the club as a whole.
The Nassau Wings meet twice a month, on the
second and fourth Wednesdays. We meet at the
Walter P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center,
28 West Carl Street, Hicksville at 8:00 pm.
On non-meeting Wednesdays (weather permitting)
we meet at the Cycle Gear Parking lot in Jericho
at
the corner of North Broadway and 16th Street for a dinner ride.
Take Northern State Parkway Exit 35 South. Proceed straight
through and pull into the
parking lot to your right. We meet at 7:00, and then ride to any of a
variety of restaurants on Long Island.
At least once a month we will participate in an local organized
road event (weather permitting). These are
generally day rides that take place on Sundays, though the popular
Ramapo 500 event is a two-day affair. On other weekends,
members are encouraged to suggest possible destinations or activities.
Membership requirements are rather minimal, in
keeping with the loose nature of the organization. We encourage those who are interested in our club to meet and ride with us as guests before requesting to be considered as prospects. Prospects are
required to attend two club rides to give the active members a
chance to evaluate their ability to ride in a group. Prospects are
required to attend four meetings. This gives the membership a
chance to see if the prospect's personality is a mesh with the rest
of the club, and it gives the prospect a chance to evaluate the club
as well. After two rides and four meetings, the active membership
will vote on accepting the prospect into our ranks. Although some
clubs reportedly have an additional initiation rite, all we
ask for is the $50.00 club dues up front. Members who join late in
the year will still pay $50.00 for a year, but the next year will
only have to pay $25.00 to renew.
The Nassau Wings publishes their minutes
twice a month for all active members and maintains a presence on the
WorldWide Web (you're reading that now). If you are
interested in joining our merry band, return now to the home
page and drop a line to any of our officers who possess an E-Mail
address on the Internet!
